Fire
Services
As a result of the March 1999 election, Measure A was passed
by the citizens. Measure A transfers the responsibility for
fire and emergency medical response to the Consolidated Fire
Protection District of Los Angeles County. A Los Angeles County
Assistant Fire Chief is responsible for communications between
the City Manager of Gardena and the Los Angeles County Fire
Department. The Fire Department, under the leadership of the
Fire Chief, is responsible for the protection of life and
property from losses due to fire, explosion and other disasters.
Major divisions of the Department are:
Fire Suppression - responsible for response to all
reported fires within the City limits; for performance of
fire prevention activities which include the checking of plans
for all construction (except single family homes); routine
inspection of businesses to insure compliance with minimum
fire and safety standards; investigation for cause and origin
of fires; and public education programs.
Paramedic/Rescue - responsible for emergency medical
response in conjunction with Memorial Hospital of Gardena
and Harbor-UCLA Medical Center; response to emergency medical
aid calls within minutes to anywhere within the City of Gardena;
and response with fire suppression units to fire incidents
within the City.
Paramedics communicate from the emergency scene with the base
station at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center by means of electronic
radio telemetry equipment and/or telephone. Physicians in
attendance at the base station are on duty around the clock.
The attending physicians receive transmitted information such
as the patient's history, chief complaint, blood pressure
and heart rate, thus enabling them to prescribe appropriate
treatment to be provided by the paramedics in the field.
