C. JOHNSON
Councilwoman
Rachel C. Johnson was appointed by the Gardena City Council in March 2005 to serve as Councilwoman until March 2007, after having just completed a four-year term as City Clerk for the City of Gardena. She then received a resounding vote of confidence from Gardena citizens when she was elected to serve a four-year term as Councilmember in March 2007. Johnson was chosen by her Council Colleagues to serve as Mayor Pro Tem from March 2007 to March 2008.
She is a twenty-seven year educator with the Los Angeles Unified School District, and is a member of the United Teachers of Los Angeles, the National Council of Negro Women, the UCLA Alumni Association, and the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.
Johnson has been on the Board of Directors of Gardena Youth Football and Cheerleading Inc. for the past fifteen years and is a volunteer cheer coach at Gardena High School.
A 1982 graduate of UCLA with a B.A. in Psychology, Councilwoman Johnson plans to pursue a Master’s Degree in Education at Loyola Marymount University.
Her many Council responsibilities include representing the City on the Boards of Centinela Youth Services, the Southern California Joint Powers Consortium, and the West Basin Water Association.
Gardena has been Mrs. Johnson’s home for over 25 years. She and her husband, Philip, have four children, who are all very involved in community and school activities.
Councilwoman Johnson is sharing new ideas, and displaying strong administrative abilities; working hard to make this community a safe place to live, work, and raise a family.
