Born and raised in the City of Gardena, Maria is the daughter of Asuncion (deceased) and Isidro Marquez. Maria is one of two daughters.
Maria credits her achievements, work ethic, and commitment to her community to the teachings, support and encouragement her parents and community mentors gave her during her formative and adult years.
Maria attended the following Gardena and Torrance schools before going to UCLA for her Bachelors and Masters Program: St. Anthony of Padua Elementary School and Bishop Montgomery High School.
Maria holds a Masters degree from UCLA’s School of Public Policy and Social Research. Since graduating in 1996, she has held managerial positions with non-profit agencies throughout Los Angeles County. Currently, Maria works for LINC Housing Corporation. LINC is a statewide provider of affordable housing for limited income seniors and families. Maria is responsible for the development and oversight of life enhancing services at each of LINC’s communities.
In addition to her professional activities, Maria has dedicated herself to mentoring and training future Social Workers as a field instructor for Cal State University Long Beach, USC, and UCLA. She has served on the Board of Gardena’s Cable Usage Corporation and, prior to her appointment as City Clerk, was serving as a Commissioner for the Human Services Commission of Gardena. Maria’s volunteerism also includes many service hours while a member of a local Gardena Girl Scout Troop, the Kiwanis Club of Gardena, the Wall of Fame Committee and the Cinco de Mayo Festival Committee. Maria is currently a 2010 Relay for Life of Gardena committee member for the American Cancer Society.
Maria enjoys spending her free time reading, riding bikes, and re-discovering life’s simple pleasures with her family and friends.
